Retrofit Installations

Walls

Step 1

Mark out the stud locations on ceiling and walls

Remove any electrical covers to prepare wall for SONOpan Install

Step 2

Install SONOpan panels over existing wall, secure with drywall screws that penetrate at least 3/4″ into studs

Seal around the perimeter of the wall with LePage acousti-seal or equivalent

Seal any gaps between panels with acousti-seal

Step 3

Install new drywall on top of the SONOpan. Longer screws will be needed to penetrate at least 3/4″ into stud

Offset the joints of the drywall from the SONOpan

Mud & tape as usual

**Optional Finishes**

Drywall is best for soundproofing since it adds mass to the wall assembly however, you may install most finishes over SONOpan including shiplap or paneling. Note that wallpaper and paint are not advised on the soft SONOpan panels.

Retrofit Ceilings

Follow the same install procedure as above.

Note that insulation is optional. The role of insulation is to eliminate resonance in an empty cavity. Although this is helpful when soundproofing, the minimal incremental benefit of removing drywall to install any insulation usually does not justify the work involved.

Helpful Information

Maximizing your Soundproofing

It is recommended to soundproof any wall or ceiling where flanking could be of concern. Flanking takes place when noise takes a travelling path around the soundproofed area. Although the majority of noise may transmit through one area sound may be travelling around that particular wall or ceiling. (e.g. through the wall, up through a stud cavity and into another room).

Retrofit installs may not be as beneficial as installations intentionally designed to reduce sound transmission from initial construction. For best results any opening in a wall should be addressed.

SONOpan can be installed on either side of a wall to stop airborne noise travelling both ways.

Working With SONOpan

Cutting - For best cut results use a circular saw with a sharp blade. When cutting inside the use of a dust vacuum is recommended

Fastening - Secure with drywall screws. If applying directly to wood crown staples, plastic cap or roofing nails can be used

Finishing - Seal the perimeter of the wall or ceiling and any gaps with acoustical sealant. Drywall sheets should be offset to improve soundproofing
