Drywall is best for soundproofing since it adds mass to the wall assembly however, you may install most finishes over SONOpan including shiplap or paneling. Note that wallpaper and paint are not advised on the soft SONOpan panels.
insulation usually does not justify the work involved.
It is recommended to soundproof any wall or ceiling where flanking could be of concern. Flanking takes place when noise takes a travelling path around the soundproofed area. Although the majority of noise may transmit through one area sound may be travelling around that particular wall or ceiling. (e.g. through the wall, up through a stud cavity and into another room).
Retrofit installs may not be as beneficial as installations intentionally designed to reduce sound transmission from initial construction. For best results any opening in a wall should be addressed.
SONOpan can be installed on either side of a wall to stop airborne noise travelling both ways.
