Dovey and his team installed SONOpan panels on the basement ceiling to reduce noise passing from the floor above. To further enhance sound isolation, they ran 2×4 furring strips across the joists, then fastened the SONOpan and drywall to the furring instead of directly to the framing. This created a separate layer that decouples the finished ceiling from the joists and helps block vibrations from transferring between floors. This setup provided significant soundproofing while maintaining ceiling height and allowing a straightforward installation process suitable for homes. This setup provided a major improvement in sound control without compromising ceiling height or requiring structural changes.
