How SONOpan panels helped create quieter, more peaceful homes in Michigan

Livonia Builders

Overview

Homeowners want more than just attractive finishes—they seek comfort, privacy, and peace. For multi-family homes, soundproofing is critical. In Trenton, Michigan, Livonia Builders, led by Danny Veri with nearly 40 years of experience, built 29 new homes, some with shared walls. Traditional methods often failed to block noise, causing complaints and dissatisfaction. To offer a better living experience, Veri sought a cost-effective, reliable, scalable soundproofing solution for his development.

Solution

The team used a combination of methods to reduce noise transmission. First, double-wall framing with cavity insulation added mass and separation. Then, SONOpan soundproofing panels made from recycled wood fibers were installed on both sides of shared walls—about 10 panels per side. To boost effectiveness, walls were finished with two layers of 5/8” drywall each side. Acoustic fire putty pads sealed electrical boxes, blocking sound and vibrations. This created a strong acoustic barrier while being practical to install at scale.

Results

Tests during and after construction showed dramatic sound improvements. Even loud music and power tools on one side could not be heard in the neighboring unit. Wall surfaces vibrated slightly to the touch, but adjacent units remained completely silent. These results greatly enhanced homeowner comfort and satisfaction. Danny Veri called SONOpan a “game-changing solution” and plans to use it in hundreds of future homes as a key way to deliver quieter, higher-quality living environments.

Applications

SONOpan is widely used in both single- and multi-family projects where noise reduction is essential, such as shared walls, bedrooms, and home offices. Builders value its dependable soundproofing and sustainable design made from recycled wood fibers. For Livonia Builders, it has become a core part of their process, helping deliver homes that are not only attractive but also provide lasting acoustic comfort.
